Myanmar navy seizes boat with 727 migrants government says

CAMBODIA, July 29 (Reuters) – Myanmar armed forces seized a boat carrying 727 migrants on Wednesday on its border with Burma and detained almost 500 people, the army said.

“The boat was intercepted by armed forces at about 13:40 (0940 GMT) at about 300 metres ahead of the boat crossing to Chittagong from Bagan, said police Maj Gen Aung San Suu Kyi.

The men aboard included about 70 children and women, she added.

At least 30 people managed to escape with a small amount of water and food, she added.

Some 20 border guards, mostly from China and Vietnam, were on patrol with helicopters monitoring their work with guns held to their heads, Suu Kyi told reporters.

She said most of the 878 refugees had just arrived from Thailand, which has its own border dispute with China over a large tract of land it claims as its territory.

She said the army had made the decision to seize the boat after the authorities in Burma refused to accept the migrants on an exchange.

But she did not give a figure for the number of migrants the navy was preparing to take off to China for refugee resettlement in countries 가평출장샵like Vietnam, India or Cambodia.

Suu Kyi, who was elected prime minister on a reformist platform last year, launched a year-long anti-corruption crackdown aimed at ending what she called impunity for abuses at the top levels of government.

Despite the crackdown, the army has continued to crush protests and clashes in which people have died.

As protests swept the country, the military began imposing tougher pu온라인 바둑이nishments. Some 600 are 바카라currently in prison for acts of violence.

The human rights ministry said a total of 5,917 people had been sentenced to death since November this year for human rights violations and another 4,942 to life imprisonment.

The country has one of the worst records on executions in Southeast Asia in terms of its population.
